A California woman is wanted by police after they say she rerouted a McHenry County College administrator’s paycheck to a potentially forged bank account.
Lois Anne Letterman, 57, of the 10300 block of Western Avenue, Downey, California, is charged with theft, forgery and identity theft. The most serious charge, identity theft of more than $2,000, typically is punishable by as many as seven years in prison.
Although prosecutors with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office are not seeking Letterman’s extradition from California to Illinois, she could be detained if she enters Illinois or specific nearby states, MCC Police Chief Mike Clesceri said.
Reached by phone Wednesday, prosecutors declined to comment on the charges.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the McHenry County Circuit Clerk’s Office on Tuesday, Letterman is accused of authorizing a direct deposit in an administrator’s name on Sept. 11. The deposit totaled about $3,899, according to the MCC Campus Police Department complaint.
Representatives from MCC could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday morning.
Police don’t believe Letterman has any connection to the college; rather, authorities suspect the theft was part of a “spoofing scam,” Clesceri said.
“We don’t have any indication that there’s any kind of security breach at the college,” Clesceri said.
Generally speaking, spoofing scams occur when a person obtains another’s information, usually by pretending to be someone they’re not, Clesceri said.
Anyone who suspects they might be the target of a spoofing scam should call their bank directly or speak with a bank employee in person, Clesceri said.
“If you receive things asking for your identity or things asking for your passwords or account numbers, the best advice I could is that banks normally will not ask for that information over the internet,” Clesceri said.
MCC Campus Police Department’s investigation is ongoing, although there were no indications Wednesday that any other campus-related accounts were affected by the alleged scam, Clesceri said.
