Classic Catskill resort featured in ‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ can be yours for $6M - syracuse.com

This marvelous property on Oquaga Lake has a boathouse, docks, seven cabins, tennis courts, 18 hole golf course, bowling alley, ballroom, and much more.

If you’re a Maiselite, it’s a steal. The Scott’s Family Resort in Deposit, New York, is a unique blend of relaxation and vintage charm. Its rustic buildings, along with antique furniture is like a step back in time. Many of the buildings and grounds seemed to be preserved from the 1940s and 1950s. There’s even an old-fashioned ice cream parlor and a bowling alley where you have to set up your own pins.

Located in the northern Catskills in Broome County, the Scott’s is the real life filming location for scenes of the fictitious Steiner Mountain Resort in the Amazon Prime Video series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The show set in the late 1950s New York is about a housewife name Midge Maisel who discovers her passion for stand-up comedy.

In season 2, episode 4 “We’re Going to the Catskills,” Midge joins her parents at their annual summer family vacation. Three episodes were filmed at the Scott’s including the exterior and interior of the Playhouse, the Windermere cottage, and the dock where Abe wears his “romper” to perform morning calesthenics.

Since 1869, six generations of the Scott family have been operating this hospitality business. Earlier this month, a Facebook post said they will not open for the 2020 season due to “circumstances beyond our control.”

“The Scotts (Ray and Doris) are in their 90s and they have health issues that make them feel selling is in the best interests of themselves, as well as their children,” said Jill Gorton of Woodland Creek Real Estate.

Here is an opportunity for all kinds of use by potential buyers, according to Gorton. Land around both the lake and golf course is available for development. Gorton says possibilities can be a resort, wedding destination, convention center, rehab facility, an organic farm, and much more.

“Location is everything and the resort sits on one of the cleanest, if not the cleanest lake in the state,” said Gorton. “A dedicated waste facility is in place for the entire lake side community.”

This is a 150 year-old resort and Gorton says repairs are needed. Among them include the main lodge requiring a new roof and windows and the commercial kitchen can be updated.

“The property is the last of the Borscht Belt,” said Gorton. “It still has much to offer the discerning. It needs a lot of love. Repairs need to be done but as they say, ‘location, location.' Scott’s has that!”

Here’s more background about the Scott’s early beginnings.

James H. Scott and Elvira J. Wilder, married and left their home in Brattleboro, VT, in 1845. They moved to Jackson, PA, via ox cart in those days. In 1869, Scott bought a farmhouse and 98 acres of farmland on Sand Pond (later to be called Oquaga Lake) in Deposit, NY. The couple moved to Deposit and within a year, they began boarding visitors at the Oquaga Lake Farm House. They bought a lakefront property in 1873, which started the lakeside resort. By then, the main farmhouse accommodated around 50 guests who were each charged an average of $8 per week for room and board, and 25 cents for transportation to and from the Deposit Erie Railroad Line via horse and carriage.

At the turn of the century, Scott and his son Elwin had established the Lake House as both a summer resort and center for commerce, where local residents could go for their mail, fresh milk from the dairy, ice and supplies from the general store. The Casino (today known as the Playhouse) offered bowling alleys, a state-of-the-art soda fountain, and a hardwood dance floor. It quickly became one of the highlights on the lake.

In 1908, Elwin’s son, Raymond James Sr., bought the property from his father and later changed the name to Scott’s Oquaga Lake House.

On Christmas Eve in 1921, the 200-room farmhouse, post office and general store all caught fire. Scott and his wife were out of town with his parents. Although the farmhouse had been completely destroyed, Raymond Sr., vowed to rebuild a new lake house in its place. He did and welcomed guests to his new lodge in the spring of 1922.

The grand re-opening was followed by an era of prosperity for a few years, but the resort struggled during World War II with food and gasoline rationing. However, Raymond Sr., continued to open his resort each season.

In 1947, the Scotts celebrated the marriage of Raymond James Jr. to Doris Edwards. In the 1950s, Ray, Doris and their three daughters Patty, Peggy and Nancy developed new business strategies. By 1958, the reins to the hotel had been handed over to Ray and Doris. They hosted the American Gymnastics Camp from the late 1960s through the early 70s, accommodating hundreds of young hopefuls and adding several new constructions along the way. It was also during this time that the family grew again with the births of Linda and Jimmy and the marriages of daughters Patty and Peggy, who both continued to work at the resort with their husbands.
