A woman from Northern Texas became a millionaire for a day due to a clerical error made by her local bank.
On Tuesday, Dallas resident Ruth Balloon made the shocking discovery that $37 million had been deposited into her account at LegacyTexas Bank.
"I was like, 'wow, we have a lot of money'! I hoped someone really gifted us with that $37million," she told local news station CBS 11. However, the hope was brief.
According to reports, after telling her husband about the substantial boost to her funds, Balloon notified the bank of her sudden windfall. An employee apologetically informed her that her newfound wealth was in fact a mistake, and took immediate action to re-route the money to its true owner. Before the change was made, Balloon took a screen shot of her account, as proof that she had once been a millionaire.
"I was a millionaire. I have a screen shot of it so I can say that now. It's quite a story," she told CBS 11 before stating her hopes of receiving a reward from the bank. "A 'thank you' reward would be a little bit good. Just for being a good customer and notifying them as soon as possible.
In response to the TV station's inquiries, LegacyTexas Bank offered the following statement:
"On Tuesday, December 10, our client made a foreign currency deposit into her LegacyTexas account. Due to the fluctuation in exchange rates, all foreign currency transactions must be manually entered into our system through our back office. When our client's deposit was being keyed in, our representative entered her account number into the amount field by mistake.
"Although our client brought the error to our attention and the transaction was immediately reversed, less the amount of her original deposit, it would have been caught and corrected during our evening processing. Rest assured, our systems are sound, and this manual entry error has been addressed."
Earlier this year, a couple from Pennsylvania who found themselves in a similar situation chose to allegedly spend their newfound income.
According to Fox 5, Robert and Tiffany Williams reportedly received an accidental deposit of $120,000 into their account on May 31. The outlet went on to report that the two allegedly did not contact their bank to correct the issue and instead spent most of the money by June 19. The bank eventually caught wind of the error and and contacted the couple to pay roughly $100,000 in overdraft fees. At the time of that report, the Williamses were facing felony charges.
