VILLAGE OF DEPOSIT (WBNG) -- After a long battle between the village board and local residents, the votes have finalized the decision to abolish the police department and court.
Both resolutions passed Tuesday evening after a special election was held at the Village Hall.
229 people voted yes to abolish the Village of Deposit Police Department, whereas 156 voted not to abolish it.
235 people voted yes to abolish the local village justice court, while 150 people voted not to abolish it.
As you may recall, this battle has been brewing in the area for months now with concerns being expressed on both sides. The village board wanted to cut back on taxpayer money by abolishing the departments, or else they would have to hike up the taxes in the village.

Meanwhile, residents were not happy with the resolutions, saying relying on the Broome and Delaware County Sheriff's Offices was too risky when it came to their safety.
One voter, Neil MacDonald, who disagreed with the resolutions, explained his issue with the budget cuts, saying, "If we have a problem with the budget, let's find ways to fix the budget rather than pulling strings out of thin air. It just doesn't work that way."
However, Mayor Bryan Moore who was in favor of the resolutions, has explained in the past that the budget cuts will save thousands in taxpayer dollars. He wrote in a statement to 12 News about the resolutions passing, saying, "the voters have spoken and I hope our community can get back to business as usual."
The cuts to the police department and village justice court will officially take place March 1.
