Indonesian Muslims hold massive rally to support Uighurs

Uighur Muslims had been tortured, isolated, banned from practicing Islamic teachings.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Thousands of people supporting Uighur performed congregational prayer of Ashar in front of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China (PRC) on Mega Kuningan street, South Jakarta, on Friday (Dec 21). The rally was carried out to voice criticism against violences experienced by ethnic Uighur Muslims in Xianjiang, China.

The demonstrators were using their drinking water supplies and helped each other to pour water when performing ablution. Ustaz Bachtiar Natsir became the imam for the congregational Ashar prayer. The pilgrims were making parallel rows for prayer along Mega Kuningan street, facing the PRC Embassy.

Ashar prayer, which was led by prominent cleric ustaz Bachtiar Natsir, was held orderly despite using makeshift loudspeakers. Every time uttering takbir and tahmid ustaz Bachtiar brought loudspeakers to his mouth, so his voice could be heard by the pilgrims.

They resumed their activities after praying. Some orators returned to deliver their orations. Meanwhile, a number of people who joined the Muslim Solidarity Movement held a demonstration in front of Gedung Sate yard, Diponegoro street, Bandung, on Friday (Dec 21) for the same reason.

Spokeperson of Muslim Solidarity Movement, Trisna Adi said the humanitarian crisis experienced by Uighur Muslim had been occured for a long time. The Chinese government was alleged to conduct ethnic and ideological cleansing to the Uighur etnic, and was done with violences.

He asserted that it was violating their human rights. Moreover, Uighur Muslims were an indigenous Xinjiang who should have freedom.

"The ideological cleansing was carried out by restraining religious rights. The impact of the restraints was felt by Uighur Muslims," ​​Trisna said.

He said, the Chinese government argued that it was done in an effort to tackle terrorism and restore the native culture of the people there. Uighur Muslims were being held at the government-owned camp of the Chinese government. As fellow Muslims, his party criticized the humanitarian tragedy that occurred in the Uighur.

"All of us, from the Muslim Solidarity Movement, condemn the violences committed by the Chinese government to the Uighur people in Xinjiang. We also demand the Chinese government to stop the violences against Uighur people," he said.

Demonstrators urged the government of the Republic of Indonesia to be actively involved and concerned about the conditions that experienced by the Uighur community. The Indonesian government can use diplomatic relationship to help Muslim Uighur victims get their rights back.

"We urge the OIC and the United Nations to take concrete actions in accordance with international provisions to carry out world order in the name of human rights," he said.
